Art Deco Lounge and Dining Room
The client specified a preference for light blues and greens. With the exception of the drama in the hallway, this became the core of our brief. The dining area is entered from the hallway and the lounge is accessed through a wide arch, making it almost "open plan". For this reason the design scheme is contiguous for both areas.

The dining area is quite small and is a high traffic area for access to the lounge, so simplicity was the key. A maple dining table and chairs upholstered in light tones minimises the "presence" of the furniture in the room. Original, carefully restored, art deco wall-lights flank the main artwork for the space - a modern art print by a Californian artist. This piece is paired with another by the same artist that hangs over the mantelpiece.

Here the glamour of the art deco style really asserts itself. The sleek colours of the chrome and sand-blasted glass tables are picked up and reflected back by the artwork on the wall. The long, linear framed windows that are so typical in buildings of this era are complimented by the wide horizontal stripe of the curtain material. The petrol and dragon-fly tones of this material are echoed on the scatter cushions. The sofas were pre-existing and held a certain place in our client's heart. The problem they caused for us was their size was threatening to sabotage the clean, uncluttered look we were pursuing. The solution was to re-cover them in a blue-grey fabric that caused them to recede into the new grey carpet.
Authentic period touches were added with the lamps, original restored wall-lights and a reproduction round Eileen Gray table. The art deco figurines, of which the client already had a collection, started to look very much at home.
